Study Abroad | Culinary & Cultural Tour of Oaxaca, Mexico

October 2024
Travel to Mexico this fall with the Glassell School of Art. Explore the cuisine, culture, and art-making traditions of Oaxaca, a coastal state renowned for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant art scene, and world-class gastronomy. This immersive, week-long course offers an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the essence of Oaxacan cuisine and artistry through cooking classes, street-food tours, demonstrations, and studio visits with local artists.
Home to the largest Indigenous population in Mexico, Oaxaca has been hailed as the food capital of Mexico, and as a hub for artists, with a rich tradition of artisanry that has been passed down through centuries.
During your week abroad, learn Zapotec cooking with a hands-on immersive cooking class in an authentic Zapotec kitchen; explore Oaxacan/Mixteca cuisines at renowned local restaurants; and experience a curated tour of Oaxacan street foods. In addition to the culinary adventures, the course includes a look at the local artistic tapestry; hearing from Oaxacan women printmakers; seeing ancient weaving techniques demonstrated by local weavers; visiting a contemporary photography studio; and exploring two ceramics studios, one of which uses the well-known black clay of Oaxaca.
The trip concludes with a gathering in the studio of painter and printmaker Rolando Rojas, where four prominent Oaxacan artists talk about and show their work. That final day culminates with a farewell feast featuring the iconic underground roasting of a goat—with vegetarian options available.
