  1. Three Questions for Christopher Rothko

Nov 4, 2015 - I think of Houston as maybe the central Rothko city. What all that adds up to—or maybe what I should say it all comes from—is that connection I feel to this work. Something continually moves me in my father's painting. I talked with Christopher Rothko about the work of his father, the subject of his new book Mark Rothko: From the Inside Out, published this autumn by Yale University Press. 1.

  2. “Stay the Course”: An Interview with Artist Joyce J. Scott

Jan 16, 2019 - I am 70 years old and I have always been looking for challenges and to defy myself. No matter what life gives you, stay the course. I’m sharing my love for ancient techniques—specifically African and indigenous techniques that are a part of who I am as well as a part of my culture. JS: It’s a different world now than when I started working. We have new technology, the competition is dense, and we’re working with a globally connected population.

  3. New Year Reflections

Dec 30, 2011 - We function primarily as an institutional archive, although outside collections of individuals or organizations closely associated w/ the MFAH are acquired and now number 80. Lastly, I feel that some regulatory compliance, such as restricting Personally Identifiable Information, is actually easier in an electronic environment.             3. I feel for a number of reasons that the MFAH is at a critical juncture. One is that e-records created in 1998 should become accessible for public research within the next 3 years.

  4. MFAH + Houston Zoo Crossover: A Tale of Two Curators

Nov 8, 2019 - When I found a bird that was similar, I would check the native range of that species and confirm that it fits with the place where the painting was made. Aimée Froom: I was curious to learn more about the birds depicted in our miniature paintings. Also, I will never look the same way at the common green magpie featured in one elegant Persian painting after I learned from Chris that these birds are actually quite raucous and antisocial.   Were there any surprises?

  7. Rothko in Reproduction: Dan Fischer’s Graphite Homage

Dec 15, 2015 - Fischer explained to the Guardian: “I can’t really say how one image jumps out and chooses me, or I it—it just happens. I can say that I only draw artists or artworks that have inspired or moved me.” I believe Rothko will be important for centuries to come.”James Turrell also admires what one critic described as Rothko’s “wall of light.”

  8. Telling Tales out of School

Oct 4, 2013 - There’s a film two boys made that I don’t have anymore. It’s about Steve Jobs, who lives on the moon, and he battles Bill Gates. I sat down with Seth to get some background on these sometimes-dark, often-funny videos and his students, who range in age from 8 to 18. Here I am telling them “Let’s make a film about the Three Little Pigs,” and the kids are like, “No, let’s make Steve Jobs versus Bill Gates.”

  9. A Lifelong Passion for Film Leads to the MFAH

Dec 1, 2021 - Growing Up at the MoviesBy the time I came along in the 1950s, I would spend several weeks each summer in Denison, and the State Theater was my playground. During one of the last weeklong summer trips with them, and minus the booster seat, I was introduced to Antonioni’s Blow-Up—not once, but five times. OK, I was hooked. Foreign films ruled. My grandfather made a booster seat for me to use in the projection booth, and there I sat for hours watching films like Old Yeller, Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, Psycho, and Village of the Damned.
