Post-film Q&A with filmmaker Alex Rappoport
For his debut documentary, director Alex Rappoport profiles his neighbor in upstate New York: abstract artist Peter Bradley (born 1940). When the two met in 2020, Bradley had neither sold many paintings nor had a major show in more than four decades. The film captures Bradley on the cusp of gaining well-deserved recognition. Of interest to Houstonians: Bradley worked with philanthropist John de Menil to curate The De Luxe Show, a groundbreaking 1971 exhibition at the De Luxe Theater in the Fifth Ward.
“(The film) reveals that being an outsider is also the foundation of the artist’s vision and discipline, reflected in his love of nature and solitude. The serene cinematography and editorial pacing capture all of this with eloquent understatement and warmth.” —Charles Burnett, filmmaker and MacArthur Fellow
