Product Description

Adiós Utopia: Art in Cuba Since 1950 offers a new vision of artistic development and production centered on the utopian spirit that defines Cuba’s revolutionary period and the nation’s impact on art.

Aesthetics, politics, and culture—often inextricably interlinked in artwork created during this period—in turn exemplify the global transcendence of how art can respond to a dynamic context. This project reveals a broad range of trends and approaches from the 1950s to the present, covering a variety of mediums such as paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, and posters, among others.

With more than 150 images of art from the exhibition and over 100 images from archival documents spanning some 60 years, the book includes essays by historians, art critics, curators, artists, and other academics, as well as a comprehensive chronology.

The catalogue accompanies the exhibition Adiós Utopia: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950, on view March 5–May 21, 2017.
