  1. Creating “Big Bambú”: An interview with rock climber Katherine Tong

Jun 15, 2018 - I was so excited when the Starn brothers’ staff reached out to our rock-climbing club. I’ve been coming to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, since I was a kid. I used to visit pretty much every Thursday to bring my grandma, and I’m a member now, too! I chatted with one of the rock climbers, Katherine Tong, about creating a unique work of art in her hometown. What has been the process for installing this work of art?

He was kind enough to allow us to share his personal anecdote: “When I was a boy in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, friends and I would go camping in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains, where the film’s outdoor scenes were shot In his 1988 autobiography, The Ragman’s Son, Douglas said, “I love the theme that if you try to be an individual, society will crush you.”

  3. 4 Questions about “Sontag” for Author Benjamin Moser

Sep 17, 2019 - Before I started working on this book, I assumed that Susan was gay in the same way I assumed she was Jewish. It never crossed my mind that she wasn’t, or that everyone didn’t know. But as I began looking into her life and her relationships, I learned that she had never acknowledged her sexuality publicly, and indeed she lied about it constantly. I couldn’t imagine that anyone she knew, or any of her readers or admirers, would care either way.

  5. Making Holiday Magic, One Track at a Time

Dec 15, 2016 - When designing and creating the model, I kept in mind ease of disassembly for transport and storage. Four tables are joined to support the mountain, which I built in sections that can be fitted around the 12-foot Christmas tree at the center of the Spiegeltent. To sculpt the mountain, I glued together layers of Styrofoam planks—the same planks normally used to insulate homes—and decorated the foam with paint, flexible grout, and miniature trees.

  6. Operating on Art: Treating Walker Evans’s “Banda Headdress”

Aug 1, 2014 - After this—and countless other valuable experiences I have had at the MFAH—I look forward to demonstrating everything I learned during my graduation presentation and in my new fellowship position this fall in San Francisco. Over the past year, I have had the privilege of completing my internship with the wonderful staff and art collections at the MFAH. I was then able to stabilize the tear by: Mending with gelatin adhesive Reinforcing the back with Japanese paper and wheat-starch paste Retouching around the tear using watercolors Each step was performed using

  7. Every Dot Knows Where It Is: A Chat with Pipilotti Rist

Jun 26, 2017 - I read your quote “I am interested in the combination of nature and technology; these are not two different things,” and I really liked that idea. How do nature and technology meld in this exhibition? Compared to other artists, I work very collaboratively. And in the studio, I only have one full-time person. The CGI for Worry Will Vanish is by Elefant Studios, Zurich, and all the real footage is from my own camera.

  9. A Cinematic Look at Mexican History: Chatting with “Tales of Mexico” Producer Luis Salinas

Sep 11, 2017 - I was so involved with all the stories that it’s hard to say! I do really like the first segment, which takes place in 1910. It sets the tone of the apartment building, and I thought it was so beautiful. I also really enjoy the sixth story. The characters are so unapologetic, and it features my favorite acting in the whole film.

  10. Looking Together

Jul 25, 2014 - A year ago, as I was interviewing for my position here at the MFAH, one of the biggest incentives for me was that I would get to oversee the Museum’s wonderful and growing programs for visitors with disabilities. The Museum offers I have experienced this in my year at the Museum, watching the participants’ eyes light up as they connect with the art, their families, and one another. I thoroughly enjoy working with this constituency and the amazing MFAH docents who facilitate these tours. “Looking Together” was launched six years ago at the request of one of our devoted participants and friends, Dr.
