  1. Rediscovering a Velázquez: The Attribution of “Kitchen Maid”

Dec 18, 2018 - One of the Museum’s biggest announcements of 2018 involves a 17th-century painting that, for years, was on view at Rienzi with a label that read “In the style of Diego Velázquez.” Hit “play” below to watch Bomford discuss Kitchen Maid, on view on the second floor of the Beck Building—alongside a new label that reads “Attributed to Diego Velázquez.”

  3. A Summer Salute to Legendary Actor Alec Guinness

Jul 5, 2017 - The film marked a reunion with Lean after a nearly decade-long lapse, but a variety of troubles plagued the production, and at one point, the two were not on speaking terms. A few interesting notes about the legendary actor and his films before you join us this summer: In 1932, a 28-year-old Guinness phoned John Gielgud, who was already a star of the London stage, and asked for advice about De Havilland turned 101 on July 1, and her celebration is a hard act to follow! But we’ve found a worthy successor in this summer’s series, Alec Guinness: An Actor for All Seasons.

  5. Making Holiday Magic, One Track at a Time

Dec 15, 2016 - The little buildings offer a wealth of detail. Is there anything else you’d like to add? I'd like to think the trains will stir up fond childhood memories in adults and kindle a new interest for children. For the past three months, Steve Pine, senior conservator of decorative arts, has been hard at work constructing a model train set from scratch. It features a realistic start-up progression of sounds with coaches dedicated to notable Texans, including Sam Houston, Edward Burleson, and David G. Burnet.

  10. Recognizing a Day of Jubilee: “Juneteenth Independence Day”

Jun 18, 2020 - African American life and experience is a subject that has long been a part of the MFAH photography collection, but almost exclusively centered in the 20th century, and particularly on the Civil Rights movement and more recent Texas was the first state to establish Juneteenth as a holiday, in 1980, even though it has been celebrated informally since 1865.
