  1. Hitchcock Silents

    "The Hitchcock 9" is a joint venture of the BFI, Rialto Pictures/STUDIOCANAL, and Park Circus/ITV. Special ticket prices apply for these silent-film concerts. General admission is $15. MFAH members, students with ID, and senior adults receive a $3 discount. Hitchcock Silents are generously underwritten by Salle and James Vaughn, on behalf of The Vaughn Foundation. Bruce Goldstein of the Film Forum hired a group of actors and a sound effects expert and the soundtrack was recreated live at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for the Turner Classic Movie Film Festival in April of 2013.

    Dec 7, 2016 - Happy birthday to legendary actor Kirk Douglas, who turns 100 on December 9! To celebrate his centennial, we’re screening Lonely Are the Brave, a 1962 Western he cites as one of his personal favorites. Here’s a nice bit of trivia: This movie had its world premiere at a theater in Houston! One day we saw a lot of gear and cameras being set up, about half a mile from us.

    Nov 1, 2016 - He turns 92 on November 9 and is still one of the coolest guys I know. Our Museum has had the privilege of working with this venerable photographer and filmmaker for years. First up is Don’t Blink – Robert Frank on November 5 and 6, direct by his longtime editor, Laura Israel. Of the film’s meandering style, Israel said, “That’s the way he works: He looks at his life and he tries to figure out how to have it unfold through his work in a way that is a bit of a mystery.”

The choice of fabric was deliberate: velvet symbolizes royalty.  (4)   Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain is dressed in a close-fitting bodice, false sleeves, and a hoop skirt called a guardainfante.   (2)   Symbols such as a wing and a herald’s staff indicate that this intricately carved cameo is a tiny portrait of the Roman god Mercury.

    Raqib Shaw: Ballads of East and West / June 9–September 2, 2024 This exhibition is organized by the Frist Art Museum, Nashville, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston. “I am a spectator, yet at the same time, I am a player.” He paints with porcupine quills and fine needles to render the precise details of delicate flowers or distant mountains, which are outlined in embossed gold.   8. Buns of Steel: Joachim Wtewael and the Human Body

    Dec 31, 2015 - Hear more about this topic at James Clifton’s January 9 talk, “Buns of Steel,” and see “Pleasure and Piety” in the Beck Building through January 31, for free with general admission. They are a tour de force of the painter’s art. Following the conventions of late-16th-century art, Wtewael deploys the so-called figura serpentinata: a “serpentine figure” that fits into the curve of the letter “S” or writhes and wiggles like a flame.
