Introducing Ron Mueck
Feb 22, 2017 - Evolution of a Sculptor After working as a model-maker in film and television in the United States and London, Mueck shifted his focus to the fine arts in the mid-1990s; among his first sculptures was a figure of the young Pinocchio You may find yourself identifying with a young mother, contemplating her newborn daughter. Or the adolescent boy who crouches down to peer into a mirror. A self-portrait that is nearly four times larger than life-sized, Mask II demonstrates the subtle play of realities that characterize much of Mueck’s work.

Hong Kong Cinema Meets MFAH Films for “Chicken and Duck Talk”
Jan 30, 2017 - On February 11, Karen Fang, a film scholar and member of our film committee, stops by to present a brief overview of her latest book, Arresting Cinema: Surveillance in Hong Kong Film, followed by a screening of the classic Hong Chicken and Duck Talk is such a fun, delightful film that I’d love to keep it a surprise, but in the interest of urging people to check it out, I’ll say that anyone who likes cooking shows and food movies will get a kick out of The Rear Window remake you mentioned—which turns Hitchcock’s murder mystery into a musical—is a great example of Hong Kong cinema’s irreverent take on Hollywood classics.

“Rain” Travels to the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern
Jan 3, 2017 - The installation’s sounds evoke a thunderstorm—a watery theme that complements the cistern, which was built as a drinking-water reservoir in 1926 for the City of Houston and still features a floor of shallow water. The cistern’s cavernous interior and 17-second acoustic reverberation time make for an immersive art environment as the 1-minute, 56-second video plays on a loop. The Rain installation is on view through June 4 at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, located near downtown Houston at 105 Sabine Street.

Making Holiday Magic, One Track at a Time
Dec 15, 2016 - While building the model, I often imagined what my granddaughter would enjoy most. At age 2, she finds trains of any size amazing and a treat almost beyond belief. See the model train set for yourself! It features a realistic start-up progression of sounds with coaches dedicated to notable Texans, including Sam Houston, Edward Burleson, and David G. Burnet. The little buildings offer a wealth of detail. Is there anything else you’d like to add? I'd like to think the trains will stir up fond childhood memories in adults and kindle a new interest for children.

Curator Malcolm Daniel Provides a Snapshot of Degas
Dec 12, 2016 - What I want is the atmosphere of lamps and moonlight.” In the exhibition, visitors can see a portrait of artist Auguste Renoir with poet and critic Stéphane Mallarmé. Do you have a favorite work on view in Degas: A New Vision? On the evening of December 28, 1895, Degas photographed friends at the home of his close friends Louise and Ludovic Halévy. In 1895, the year Degas took up photography with great passion and creativity, he was also burdened by feelings of mortality, and I think his photographs are closely linked to a deep melancholy, prompted by the illness and death

Celebrate Kirk Douglas’s Centennial with MFAH Films!
Dec 7, 2016 - Here’s a nice bit of trivia: This movie had its world premiere at a theater in Houston! One day we saw a lot of gear and cameras being set up, about half a mile from us. We rode our bikes there and saw Kirk Douglas getting in a jeep to ride up to the top of a ridge, where he then got onto a horse for one of the escape scenes. Gena Rowlands was nearby, causing in me a lifelong love for her.

Behind the Scenes with Bosch: Curators in Conversation
Nov 28, 2016 - a Sinful World” by a circle of Bosch followers. A new documentary on the exhibition, “Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil”—which screens at the MFAH on December 3 & 4—relates to a painting on view in the MFAH galleries: “Saint Christopher Carrying the Christ Child Through ML The film really is a celebration and a commemoration of Bosch’s singular vision. JC I suspect one of the things people will get out of the film is that Bosch paintings have a wealth of extraordinary details.

Who Needs Leftovers? Go French for “Degas: A New Vision”
Nov 26, 2016 - We all love pumpkin pie and stuffing, but Degas: A New Vision has us in a French mood—and what’s more French than a good meal and wine? Jacques Fox, Artisans When planning a menu, I feel it is important to research the people and the time period to connect all elements together. JF I love experimenting, and I like to have fun and enjoy life! Degas’s paintings are rich, textural scenes of dancers, café diners, racehorses, and snapshots of daily activities. They are full of life.
