  1. Who Needs Leftovers? Go French for “Degas: A New Vision”

Nov 26, 2016 - We all love pumpkin pie and stuffing, but Degas: A New Vision has us in a French mood—and what’s more French than a good meal and wine? Jacques Fox, Artisans When planning a menu, I feel it is important to research the people and the time period to connect all elements together. JF I love experimenting, and I like to have fun and enjoy life! Degas’s paintings are rich, textural scenes of dancers, café diners, racehorses, and snapshots of daily activities. They are full of life.

  2. Dancing with Degas

Nov 18, 2016 - For ballet class, I wear a simple leotard and pink tights.       Fig. 3, Edgar Degas, Dancers, Pink and Green, c. 1890. 3. Happy Birthday! MFAH Films Celebrates Robert Frank

Nov 1, 2016 - First up is Don’t Blink – Robert Frank on November 5 and 6, direct by his longtime editor, Laura Israel. Of the film’s meandering style, Israel said, “That’s the way he works: He looks at his life and he tries to figure out how to have it unfold through his work in a way that is a bit of a mystery.” He turns 92 on November 9 and is still one of the coolest guys I know. Our Museum has had the privilege of working with this venerable photographer and filmmaker for years.

  4. Happy Halloween! Spooky Art Lurks in the Galleries

Oct 28, 2016 - Re-creating the fine hairs of the eyelashes and eyebrows with delicate incisions, the strong, clean lines convey a timeless image, perhaps of an ancient ancestor. Salvator Rosa, The Witches’ Sabbath, c. 1640–49 Location: Beck Building, 2nd floor • Scenes of witchcraft were popular subjects in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. Moche, Skull Vessel, 100–800 AD (above) Location: Law Building, 2nd floor • This Pre-Columbian skull vessel may represent the power of a trophy head in the Moche culture of Peru.

  5. The Curator and the Collector: David B. Warren Shares His Unique Perspective

Oct 26, 2016 - As a curator, I found her wonderful to work with. She was always open to hearing what I thought, and willing to change her mind. I suggested that a more important three-quarter-length example would be better for the collection, and she agreed. The small paintings were sent back, and eventually a larger one was found. David, I realize your biography covers all aspects of Ima Hogg’s long life and cultural philanthropy, but we’d also love to know what she was like as a person.

  6. Must-See Art This Fall, Handpicked by MFAH Curatorial Staff

Sep 20, 2016 - Also on view in this Islamic art gallery is a ceramic bottle featuring a lively hunt scene of a man shooting a deer and a crane flying away. And don’t miss the fabulous archers’ thumb rings in the al-Sabah installation! That’s one reason why I find art of the ancient Americas so appealing: A lot of this art deals with death and its intimate relation to life. This fall, for the first time in the house, a quilt is displayed on the wall in the Folk Art Room. A different quilt will switch out every four months.

  7. Journey through the Egyptian Afterlife with Matthew Barney’s “River of Fundament”

Sep 1, 2016 - I visited Barney’s studio when he first arrived in New York City, while I was running the legendary alternative space White Columns. I have never found even the longest of Barney’s movies anything less than compelling, and I luxuriate in his exquisitely wrought image-making. I fully intended to do a project with Barney at White Columns, but that space was devoted to under-known artists, and Barney became famous quickly.

  8. The Story of Azaleas at Bayou Bend

Aug 29, 2016 - After three days, I found the varieties Audrey Marie, Duc de Rohan, L. C. Fisher, and Mme.\ Dominique. Photo by Rick Gardner in memory of Mary Gardner I notice your list does not include azaleas, which I think of as a traditional Southern flower. Many are no longer available from retail nurseries, so I had search for examples in private and public gardens. Quite a detective hunt! Give me a few examples of the harder azaleas to find.

  9. MFAH Films Keeps the Light Alive

Aug 2, 2016 - It’s about delivering a quality experience, whether it’s making a product, building a car, or showing a film. We’re lucky to be at a place like the MFAH that still feels 35mm reel-to-reel is relevant and important, aren’t we? Yes, definitely. On the one hand I feel sad because I’m a dinosaur, a rare breed. I don’t much care for the digital world. There are cool aspects about it, of course: A lot of things are easier, faster, and cheaper, although I really don’t like that focus. It’s less human.

  10. Invisible Forces: Mounting with Magnets

Jul 28, 2016 - A wallpaper section from Ima Hogg’s personal collection, this work of art shows a view of Istanbul from the Bosphorus Bay. Once the template was completed, we attached a beveled mat—segmented to match the edge strips—to the top of the embedded magnet strips. That helped conceal the magnets and give the appearance of a typical mat. We made a template of the strips at the edges, indicating the locations of the magnets and the edges of the artwork.
