    Sep 7, 2023 - The artist’s 2008 “Down” series featured a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521–22). Wiley has said, “That is the archaeology I am unearthing: The specter of police violence and state control over the bodies of young Black and Brown people all over the world.” He holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, an MFA from Yale University, and honorary doctorates from the Rhode Island School of Design and San Francisco Art Institute.

    Apr 19, 2023 - A successful stockbroker in the 1920s, he lost all of his earnings in the Crash of 1929. During the Depression, Webb prospected for gold, worked as a forest ranger, wrote short stories and picked up a camera. On view October 8, 2023, through January 7, 2024, the exhibition Robert Frank and Todd Webb: Across America, 1955 will bring these simultaneous projects together for the first time. For both, a composition including the American flag was too potent to resist.

    Mar 8, 2023 - In January 1945 Pearlman happened to pass the window of a Manhattan auction house, and spotted a Chaïm Soutine landscape. Featured paintings include Cistern in the Grounds of the Château Noir (c. 1900), Route to Le Tholonet (1900–04) and Mont Sainte-Victoire (c. 1904–06), from one of Cezanne’s most iconic series.  Enchanted by the painting, Pearlman made a successful bid for the work—View of Céret (1921–22), on view in this exhibition—and that first purchase triggered a passion for collecting that endured for the rest of his life.

  9. The Immersive Installations of “Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish” Return to the MFAH, beginning in March 2023

    Feb 13, 2023 - She explains further: “I want to make it clear that everything we look at is also always just organized light, which helps as I dissolve architecture and forms. Each light is controlled by a video signal so that the “forest” is constantly changing, sometimes shifting in a staccato rhythm, and sometimes in sinuous waves of color. Worry Will Vanish (2014), a two-channel video that runs in 10-minute cycles, will be projected onto the south and west walls of Cullinan Hall, taking viewers into a fantastic dreamscape where the body and nature become one.
