Every Dot Knows Where It Is: A Chat with Pipilotti Rist
Jun 26, 2017 - E. Goldschmidt made the cases one by one with a template and a mold, but no two are exactly alike in shape or effect. A machine is always only an extension of our body. For example, a camera is a bad, simple copy of our very complex eye system. I read your quote “I am interested in the combination of nature and technology; these are not two different things,” and I really liked that idea. How do nature and technology meld in this exhibition?

Take Mom to See “Ron Mueck” This Mother’s Day
May 4, 2017 - Like Mother and Child from a decade earlier, this burdened mother has a glazed, vacant look in her eyes. Mueck rarely has a specific person in mind for his sculptures, but Woman with Shopping (2013), one of his newest works, was inspired by a woman he saw on a London street corner waiting for the traffic light to turn green. , The Virgin and Child in an Interior, before 1432, oil on oak, National Gallery, London. © National Gallery, London 2017 For A Girl (top image), Mueck referenced a photograph of one of his daughters, taken just after she was

Conservators Keep “Colors of the Oasis” Vibrant
Apr 27, 2017 - I understand you have a history with the exhibition. It was a very good team. Esther Méthé (back, center) works with MFAH staff to place a woman’s robe onto a mount. What are some conservation issues around dyes and fabrics? Since I had worked on Colors of the Oasis before, I was asked to install it again in Houston. How did you help prepare for this particular display at the MFAH?

Strike a Pose and Find Inspiration with #InstaTourMFAH
Apr 13, 2017 - Recently I took a deep dive into Instagram to see which photos visitors were posting the most when at the Museum. Armed with these newfound Instagram favorites, my colleagues and I decided to have a little fun and create a new way of exploring the Museum: through #InstaTourMFAH, an Instagram-inspired, self-guided tour. The dramatic modern architecture of the building designed by Rafael Moneo plays backdrop to works from our antiquities collection, including a rare sarcophagus, a marble goddess, and a Roman ruler.

Beyond Visible: UV-Visible Fluorescence in Works of Art
Apr 11, 2017 - I was invited by the MFAH conservation department to give a workshop to discuss making the technique of UVA radiation easier and more accessible to the Museum’s staff. Conservators use a variety of imaging techniques on works of art to gather information that can’t be seen by the naked eye. One option is producing florescence, or glow, with ultraviolet A light—the type of ultraviolet light with the longest wavelength.
