  1. Home Is an Intimate Space: Amalia Mesa-Bains & “Transparent Migrations”

Dec 1, 2017 - I felt from the very beginning, when I learned of this exhibition, that this was a place for my work, because I had a long history of this theme. What is significant about having your work on view in Houston? Of course, Houston is a major venue for art, but it’s also important to me that it’s a city with a large Latino population. I am a first-generation Chicano [a person of Mexican origin or descent], and one of the roles I occupied was that of someone who made ofrendas—so most of my early work was centered around the home altar.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving! Curatorial Picks for the Holiday

Nov 17, 2017 - I can imagine stepping back in time to see a family sitting around a table with the father seated in this chair, giving thanks for a plentiful harvest. Charles Angrand, The Harvesters, 1892 Whenever I see this painting, I am reminded that my paternal grandmother was a farmer’s daughter, born around the time this work was made. —Lisa Volpe, associate curator, photography   David Regan, Fish Tureen, 1992 I embrace Thanksgiving as a time to celebrate with friends and family around a table filled with good food.

  3. Curator of Food Trucks: Malcolm Daniel on Fine Art + Food Trucks

Oct 26, 2017 - Ever since I joined the MFAH staff three-and-a-half years ago, I’ve thought our website’s description of “a curated selection of Houston’s finest food trucks” was exaggerating a bit, but secretly I’m aiming to add “Curator of If you stop by a food truck at the Museum for lunch, you’ll have a pretty good chance of spotting Malcolm Daniel, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography and food-truck aficionado. Every now and then, there’s an amazing surprise—like the day after he catered a wedding and had baby lamb chops on the menu. In short, without fail, there’s something I like at each of the trucks.

  4. Something Spooky This Way Comes! MFAH Films Presents a Halloween Weekend of Horror Films

Oct 23, 2017 - Near Dark A powerful, nontraditional vampire tale, Near Dark follows a young man in a small Midwestern town who joins a family of nomadic vampires. With a simple idea and a low budget, Romero effectively terrifies us with a feeling of impending doom and hopelessness as death awaits just outside the door. Night of the Living Dead screens October 27, 28 & 29.  Calling all witches, ghosts, and creatures of the night: As All Hallow’s Eve approaches, MFAH Films hosts a duo of terrifying films!

  6. Art Beyond Sight Brings the MFAH to All

Oct 10, 2017 - Sometimes we include tactile experiences: If a work of art features a particular texture or fabric, for example, we might bring in a similar object for participants to touch. We make sure to refer to each other by name, and at this point, we even know who we can count on for a dash of historical context or a good counterpoint. We have a core group of dedicated participants, and we welcome new guests, too.

  8. Persian Carpets across Time

Sep 17, 2017 - A Contemporary Twist Farhad Moshiri’s carpets take on a completely different role. Visitors to Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet: Contemporary Persians are greeted by a large stack of carpets, with a fighter jet–shaped section removed from the center. Moshiri brings this historical medium into a contemporary context, juxtaposing the carpets with a startling symbol of modern warfare.

  9. After Hurricane Harvey: Landscaping Tips

Sep 13, 2017 - I’ve seen grass grow through 8 to 12 inches of sand, so if it’s still alive, it will find a way. Unfortunately, roses don’t like to be wet, and they’re a hard plant to grow in Houston even on a normal day. If you have brown patches, which are caused by a fungus, you can use a mild fungicide, or try lightly sprinkling cornmeal over the area.

  10. A Cinematic Look at Mexican History: Chatting with “Tales of Mexico” Producer Luis Salinas

Sep 11, 2017 - We were presented a script while working on another project. María Diego Hernández, whom we knew as the sister of a sound technician we worked with, had written a script that had already won several awards. I was so involved with all the stories that it’s hard to say! I do really like the first segment, which takes place in 1910. It sets the tone of the apartment building, and I thought it was so beautiful. Luis Salinas, a Houstonian who produced the film and joins us in person for the screenings on September 15 & 17, chatted with me about the expansive narrative. Tales of Mexico is such a unique project.
