  1. Claudia Cardinale: The Indomitable

    Selections include highlights from her early career, as well as her iconic roles in 8 1/2, The Leopard, and Once Upon a Time in the West. This year it’s a celebration of actress Claudia Cardinale (born in Tunisia in 1938), whose beauty and talent have made a strong impression in countless films. A new commemorative publication, Claudia Cardinale: The Indomitable, is available in the Hirsch Library. Organized by Camilla Cormanni and Paolo Ruggiero, with thanks to Marco Cicala and Germana Ruscio, Cinecittà.

  3. Thelma Ritter: Hollywood’s Favorite New Yorker

    -- Begin Grid Row --> Thelma Ritter (1902–1969) was a memorable American character actress with a strong New York accent. In her films, she was often cast as the assistant to the star. Film historian Christina Putnam, a native Houstonian whose biography of Ritter is forthcoming, introduces selected screenings. Ritter’s acerbic wit and authenticity set her apart, and her characters typically had the common sense her employers lacked. Between 1951 and 1963, Ritter won a Tony Award and was nominated for six Academy Awards.

  8. Through the Lens of Black Women: Beauty and Expectations

    -- Begin Grid Row --> The film series “Through the Lens of Black Women: Beauty and Expectations” runs February 24, 2024. Autumn Johnson, University of Houston graduate and former intern with the MFAH film department, guest programs a weekend of classic and contemporary films that consider the experiences of Black women. She received a bachelor of arts degree in media production and English literature from the University of Houston in 2022.

    The lineup includes K-horror, a unique buddy comedy, sci-fi, the latest from prolific auteur Hong Sangsoo, and a celebrity guest. All films are screened with English subtitles. Recently he has been featured as Jung Joon-hwa in the series Moving and will appear in the new season of Squid Game. Yang Dong-geun presents two films from his career, each followed by a Q&A with the audience.
