  2. Reimagining Rockwell

Nov 20, 2019 - “Most of all, I hope people are inspired and activated to love, be patient, and to take a deeper look at themselves and see where they fit within the deeper mosaic of America. The Deeper Mosaic of America “I hope that people look at these images and are reminded of their humanity, their grace, and mercy,” said Gina Belafonte, who helped cast the photographs. Above, in this particular 2018 take on the original Freedom from Want (below), the father cradles an infant as the mother serves the turkey, a challenge to traditional gender roles.

  3. Lifelong Learning at the Glassell School of Art

Nov 18, 2019 - I chose to relocate in Houston, and I worked for Shell for 34 years as a refinery operator. When I retired, I wanted to do art and see if I was good at it. Registration takes place January 7 and 8. See the schedules and the course catalog. One of the hardest things is to look inward and to find a way to reflect what you see in a way that is informative and artistic. You have to figure out, “What do I see?” and “What do I want to say about myself?”

  4. Still-Life Smorgasbord

An elaborate salt cellar with a generous scoop of salt sits behind cloth-covered bread, typical of a Sabbath meal. A knife, with a Maltese cross on its blade and a handle inlaid with red and blue precious stones, dangles on the edge of the cloth. In the foreground, an overload of cakes practically tumbles off the table.

  5. MFAH + Houston Zoo Crossover: A Tale of Two Curators

Nov 8, 2019 - This was especially useful in one instance: I confirmed that a bird in one Indian painting—a golden pheasant—was not native to India but to China, and was likely offered as a diplomatic gift.   When I found a bird that was similar, I would check the native range of that species and confirm that it fits with the place where the painting was made. These paintings are based on seeing a bird in life. When a bird flies by, your eye usually focuses on facial markings.

  6. The Art of Beatriz González

Oct 19, 2019 - “In a shop window I found, next to bottles and snacks, one Salvat magazine with Le déjeuner sur l’herbe by Manet on its cover, ruined by the dirt and sun. It looked like a curtain or a circus tent painted with faded acrylics. That was what came to us from the moving and changing nature so pursued by the Impressionists.” • González / Sun-Maid Girl Sun Maid (1974) features González’s deliberately kitschy interpretation of the logo from the Sun-Maid raisins box painted on a round tray, tackling a U.S. consumer icon.

  7. A Feast for the Eyes

Oct 17, 2019 - c. 1959 | Family Meal Lithuanian-born artist Ben Shahn created art based on two ideas: “what I love and what I abhor.” , a trademark of Dutch painter Willem Claesz. In Breakfast Tacos, the aftermath of a morning meal functions as a vanitas still life, with objects connoting worldly pleasures and mortality.

  8. A Sneak Peek Inside the Core Residency Program

Oct 15, 2019 - Describe a typical day for a Core resident. I’m not sure there’s any such thing as a typical day! Most keep an incredibly active schedule with travel, teaching, and exhibition opportunities. The Core Program attracts applicants from all over the world, acting as a bridge between postgraduate training and the next stage of a professional career. You might find them in their studios developing a project or at the Museum’s Hirsch Library conducting research.

Sep 21, 2019 - The MFAH salutes Hispanic Heritage Month with Celebrating Latinx Heritage on Saturday, October 12, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The group Little Joe y La Familia performs, along with Chavela y Brown Express, Leo Garza & His Conjunto, and others. “A Tex-Mex Masterpiece” Chulas Fronteras (Beautiful Borders) (USA, 1976, 58 minutes) introduces you to music that is a fusion of traditional Mexican harmonies, central European dancehall rhythms, and a little something extra.

  10. 4 Questions about “Sontag” for Author Benjamin Moser

Sep 17, 2019 - She was an essayist, a filmmaker, a playwright, a novelist, a political activist, and that rare thing in America: a public intellectual, and a model for generations who came after her. Other people saw her as a sexual deviant, a sign of intellectual collapse, a traitor to America. Even now, 15 years after her death, a lot of people still love her, and a lot of people still hate her. It seemed so bizarre for a woman of her worldliness and sophistication that I struggled to understand it. But she grew up in a world with extremely anti-gay attitudes.
