    Dec 12, 2011 - The film features the image of a small dog—a detail from a 1659 Velázquez painting that portrays child-prince Felipe Prospero with his pet—projected onto the back of a shipping crate. An opening reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2011. The exhibition will be open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the run of the show.

  3. Beauty, Humor, and Social Justice: Gifts from Joan Morgenstern

    May 9, 2011 - And Jonothan C. George S. Zimbel’s Dog and Cat, Bona Fide Farm (1976) pictures a small kitten scrambling up a screen door and a much larger dog, standing against the door and looking up at its escaped prey. A whimsical photograph by Karl Biden depicts a dog with two black spots, one of which is a graphic circle floating half on the dog and half in space.

  4. Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting

    Mar 11, 2011 - MFAH Hours and Admission             Hours are Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; and Sunday, 12:15–7 p.m.  Admission will be free for children 5 and under, but they will need a ticket to enter the exhibition. On Thursdays, admission will be $15 for adults and $10 for children 6–18, students, and senior adults (65+). Titian Titian (c.1485-90–1576) was the greatest of all Venetian Renaissance artists.

    Feb 9, 2011 - Each week-long Summer Art Camp pairs a book with a work of art, and features discussions and art-making activities. Sunday, June 5, 2011: MFAH Family Day At this program, families can discover art together through an assortment of fun activities: a story-telling experience, a performance or film, and art-making activities inspired by the exhibition , presents an array of 52 hats that conjures a parade of identities; and Orrery (1997), carved from bone, which recreates on a minute scale an antique model of our solar system.

  6. Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time

    Oct 7, 2010 - Linnet F. Deily; The Boeing Company; and Leslie and Brad Bucher. The catalogue for this exhibition receives generous funding from Mercantil Commercebank and Furthermore: a program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund.  In his view, color is not a pigment on a solid surface but a “situation” that results from the projection of light on objects and the way this light is processed by the human eye. Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time will be on view at the MFAH’s Caroline Wiess Law Building from February 6 to July 4, 2011. 

  7. Helmut Newton: White Women • Sleepless Nights • Big Nudes

    Oct 5, 2010 - With top photographers Horst P. Newton (1920-2004) survived Nazi Germany as a self-supporting, nomadic teenager to emerge a world-renowned photographer. The prints that will be displayed in Helmut Newton: White Women • Sleepless Nights • Big Nudes were made specifically for the exhibition and are large-scale—some reaching nearly 8 x 8 feet.
