  1. Soto: The Houston Penetrable

    Intended to be touched, handled, and waded through, the strands compose a floating yellow orb on a transparent background.  A vast, floating sea of plastic strands suspended from the ceiling, the Houston Penetrable is completed only by the viewer’s participation. This immersive, kinetic environment was designed by Soto on commission from the Museum in 2004 and has taken almost a decade to produce.

    Among the architects and designers represented are Peter Behrens, Andrea Branzi, Isamu Noguchi, Richard T. Notkin, Gerrit Rietveld, Carlo Scarpa, and Ettore Sottsass.   Global in scope, the collection traces the history of Modern and Contemporary design through a wide range of media, aesthetic styles, materials, and manufacturing techniques.   Recent Accession in Design offers a selection of about 40 pieces of furniture, ceramics, graphic design, jewelry and metalwork, industrial design, and lighting that have come into the collection since 2010.

    Among the recent acquisitions on view are Julie Mehretu's Mogamma, A Painting in Four Parts: Part 4, a monumental canvas that addresses the aspirations and chaos of the Arab Spring; Ed Ruscha’s Mysteries, a text-based painting Selections from the Museum's Collection: Modern and Contemporary Art is part of a series highlighting the Museum’s exceptional holdings and showcasing works new to Houston audiences. Complementing the works from the Museum's collection are important loans, which include Matisse’s mural-scaled Le chant (The Song), commissioned by oil heir Nelson A.

  7. Georges Braque: A Retrospective

    See the Work of Two Great Modernists in Houston While Georges Braque: A Retrospective is on view, the Menil Collection presents a pair of exhibitions devoted to the work of renowned Surrealist artist René Magritte (1898– The MFAH is the only U.S. venue for Georges Braque: A Retrospective, which premiered at the Grand Palais in Paris and has been organized to mark the 50th anniversary of the French artist’s death.

  8. Made for Magazines: Iconic 20th-Century Photographs

    The images needed to command a reader’s attention and entice a passerby to stop and purchase the publication. Magazines grew quickly in number and specialty, to a peak reached between 1920 and the 1980s. Photographs have come a long way since the first halftone—a picture of Steinway Hall in Manhattan—was published in the New York Daily Graphic in 1873.
