Carmen Herrera: Structuring Surfaces
Carmen Herrera has built a prolific career spanning nine decades, dedicated to expanding the boundaries of geometric abstraction. Influenced by her early architectural training, Herrera began to conceptualize her two-dimensional paintings as objects through a series of drawings produced in 1966. Carmen Herrera: Structuring Surfaces is the first MFAH exhibition devoted exclusively to the internationally celebrated Cuban American artist, who turned 105 in May.

Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power
The MFAH presentation adds a section with a number of works from the Museum’s collections to spotlight the legacy of Black American art made in Houston and Texas during this period. The newspapers—mostly small-town journals—represent locations from Portland, Oregon, to Thunder Bay, Ontario.
