George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and other “founding fathers” became icons of the revolution and the architects of a new nation. These images defined the nation’s visual identity and character, shaping the meaning of American independence while providing a visual roadmap from colony to country. This exhibition tells that larger story through a transatlantic lens that features patriots, loyalists, and colonists, including Native Americans, African Americans, and women, as well as the English Parliament and monarchy.

Characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and a lively rhythm, jazz was as modern, exuberant, and decadent as the age it came to define. Perhaps the most familiar symbol of the Jazz Age was the flapper: a young woman who bobbed her hair, wore shorter skirts, danced, drank, smoked, and enjoyed unprecedented freedom.

The resulting sculptural pieces were groundbreaking, and the search for a new aesthetic changed international ceramic art. Key figures in this revolution were Peter Voulkos and Robert Arneson.
