Cai Guo-Qiang Commission for the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery August 5–December 30, 2010

The Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery showcases the Museum’s growing collection of Chinese art. Stunning examples of ancient and contemporary art, displayed side-by-side in an innovative juxtaposition, include bronze ware, ceramics, painting, calligraphy, and video.

To enhance the contemporary perspective, the MFAH Portal Project invited artist Cai Guo-Qiang to create Odyssey.

Cai executed Odyssey, his gunpowder drawing on 42 panels, at a Houston warehouse in early October 2010. A limited number of free tickets made it possible for the public to attend the sessions, and the ignition event was livestreamed via CultureMap and shown at the MFAH viewing party at Saint Arnold Brewing Company.

The Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery is made possible by the Chao family with additional support from Diane and John Riley, the Friends of Asian Art 2010, and WA Development/Warehouse Associates.
