Alec Guinness: An Actor for All Seasons
Tunes of Glory
Friday, August 4, 2017:
This gripping drama presents Alec Guinness (in his own favorite performance) as the hard-drinking Jock Sinclair—a bullying, sly, touchy lieutenant colonel in charge of a post-WWII Highland regiment in a snow-clad Scottish castle. Sinclair is nevertheless proud of his boys and often bends rules in their favor. When his new superior, Basil Barrow (John Mills), arrives with rule-book severity that upsets everyone, Sinclair unwisely sets about making Barrow’s life miserable. Ronald Neame‘s Tunes of Glory uses the rigid hierarchy of military life as a jumping-off point to examine the institutional contradictions and class divisions of English society, resulting in an unexpectedly moving film.
