Core Program Film Series | The Middle of Somewhere

March 26, 2025
Core Program critic-in-residence Max Tolleson hosts “The Middle of Somewhere,” a film series curated to accompany his 2025 Core Exhibition yearbook essay, “Marfa Myths.” The series is thematically arranged around the subject of Marfa, Texas, and the greater West Texas region, with each film addressing aspects of locational identity.

The Middle of Somewhere
A Q&A with Joseph Cashiola, David Fenster, and Eileen Myles follows the screening.

  • 10 Min. of Water (Directed by Joseph Cashiola, 26 minutes, 2023)
Part cooking show, part gardening documentary, part COVID-19 pandemic confessional, artist Harry Crofton and his dog June share a meal with filmmaker Joseph Cashiola in an alleyway in Marfa, Texas.
  • Opuntia (Directed by David Fenster, 56 minutes, 2018)
A supernatural true story based on the writings of 16th century conquistador-turned-shaman Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Opuntia explores one of the strangest figures in the history of the Americas. Tracing his route through the “New World” and the physical markers of his journey, the film imagines his spiritual transformation along the way.
  • The Trip (Directed by Eileen Myles, 17 minutes, 2019)
A road trip through the majestic, rough-hewn landscape between the Texas towns of Marfa and Alpine with poet Eileen Myles as your guide. Inspired by Jack Kerouac’s spoken score of Robert Frank’s 1959 classic Pull My Daisy, and Louis Malle’s 1981 talk drama My Dinner With André, Myles discusses daily life and political realities with their childhood puppets: Oscar, Bedilia, Montgomery, Casper, and Crocky.
