Filmed over a period of five years, this engaging documentary portrays a group of now-elderly women friends in Chile who have been meeting for tea for many decades. The immaculately groomed seniors have sustained this ritual throughout Chile’s historic changes.
Maite Alberdi’s camera invites audiences to share these intimate afternoons and the elaborate preparations for the tea parties. The women gossip and discuss everything from matrimony to politics to mortality. Although the camera never leaves the rooms where the teas are held, this charming film—by capturing conversations, songs, and love letters read aloud—provides a window into the women’s lives, past and present. Alberdi’s newest documentary, The Grown-Ups, screens on April 28.
