A Weekend with Photographer and Filmmaker Jerry Schatzberg

Legendary artist Jerry Schatzberg has selected three of his films to present at the MFAH over the weekend of May 31 to June 2. On Friday and Saturday, a discussion follows each screening. Prior to the screening on Sunday, Schatzberg talks about his photography career with Malcolm Daniel, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography.

“From creator of poetic images to compelling storyteller, Jerry Schatzberg has excelled in both photography and filmmaking. In Vogue, Esquire, Glamour, and Life in the 1960s, he captured intimate portraits of artists and celebrities—from Bob Dylan to Robert Rauschenberg. During the renaissance of American cinema in the 1970s, Schatzberg directed The Panic in Needle Park, Puzzle of a Downfall Child, and Scarecrow. His films mark a significant time in the history of cinema when the importance of solid and introspective narrative proved paramount.” —Michel Ciment, film critic and editor of the cinema magazine Positif
