Saturday Members Tour | Highlights of the Cullen Sculpture Garden

MFAH members are invited to explore the MFAH art collections and exhibitions on Saturday tours. Topics change monthly.

In May, join a docent on an outdoor tour of the Museum’s “tranquil oasis of art and nature” that is the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden, recently refreshed and integrated into the expanded Museum campus.

In the event of rain, the tour moves indoors for a look at sculpture in the Kinder Building.

Created by renowned 20th-century master sculptor Isamu Noguchi, the garden showcases masterworks of 20th- and 21st-century sculpture by artists including Louise Bourgeois, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, and Auguste Rodin.

“I had a revelation of the earth outdoors as a new way of conceiving sculpture,” Noguchi once wrote, describing his gardens as “sculpture for sculpture.” His plan for the Cullen Sculpture Garden was a modern approach to the traditional idea of a garden: Framed by concrete walls ranging in height, the works of sculpture are complemented by native trees, bamboo, and flowering crepe myrtle.
