Chico Rei, an enslaved Congolese king who was sold and arrived in Brazil in the 18th century, famously freed himself while working in the gold mines. The award-winning documentary Chico Rei Entre Nós explores how the legacy of Chico Rei motivates Afro-Brazilians’ ongoing activism for social justice. This film is presented to complement the exhibition Afro-Atlantic Histories.
