Artist + Curators in Conversation “Vertigo of Color”

Houston artist Alexis Pye joins curators Ann Dumas and Alison de Lima Greene for a conversation about Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism. They discuss the inspirations for the art in the exhibition, as well as the influence of these boldly colorful works. About the Artist

  • Alexis Pye, a Detroit native now based in Houston, explores the tradition of painting as a way to express the Black body outside of its social constructs to evoke playfulness, wonder, Blackness, and joy amidst adversity.

About the MFAH Curators

  • Ann Dumas, consulting curator for European art, is co-curator of Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism.
  • Alison de Lima Greene is the Isabel Brown Wilson Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.
