Hang with “Sculpted in Steel” in an Afternoon for Teens! February 15, 2016

We are part of a dedicated group of teens who gather every Friday at the Museum as a part of Houston Art New Generation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (hang@MFAH)—not only to share ideas about art, but to develop projects and turn ideas into something tangible.

The mission of hang@MFAH is to make the love of art and creation more accessible to teens, celebrating the potential for radical ideas. As a group, we are interested in both analysis and creation, mixing traditional concepts with new perspectives. We work with mentors in the galleries to discuss art and explore concepts through both analog and digital tools.

The core of hang@MFAH is the art that surrounds us, so the exhibition Sculpted in Steel: Art Deco Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1929–1940 has inspired us to create a youth event, dubbed “Drivers Ed.” Excitement is revving over the April event, which includes sketching, tours, making mousetrap cars, poetry readings, and a film screening. This afternoon of activities allows for a deeper look into the exhibition and provides the opportunity to explore the Museum and the ideas behind Sculpted in Steel that can’t be experienced anywhere else.

Members of hang@MFAH have designed “Drivers Ed” to entice teen enthusiasts of ingenuity to visit the Museum. Join us to celebrate the imagination of pioneers who demonstrated avid attention to beauty beyond convention while incorporating popular constructions of design.
