Actor Shaun Toub saw this film at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles and asked to present it in Houston. Shot secretly without permits, "Bahman Ghobadi´s (A Time for Drunken Horses) infectiously lively and youthfully exuberant film follows two intelligent and determined Persian teens as they jump through hoops doing what in many other countries is relatively simple: forming a rock band. As they comb Tehran´s basements, recording studios, and even cattle ranches for other fellow rockers, they begin to understand the difficulty of attaining artistic freedom in a highly restrictive society. An untamed love of music drives [the film while] Ghobadi keeps the desire for creative expression alive and reveals the Iranian underground music scene in all its frenetic, hidden glory. Winner of the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival." —AFI Fest
The film is cowritten by Roxana Sebari, Iranian-American journalist (NPR, Fox News, PBS) and fiancee of the filmmaker, who was accused of spying for the U.S. and imprisoned in Tehran last year. She was eventually released.
A reception cosponsored by the Society of Iranian-American Women for Education (SIAWE)follows in the museum galleries.
This film is part of the 17th Iranian Film Festival film series.
Iranian-born actor Shaun Toub has received acclaim for his roles in such films as Iron Man and The Kite Runner and has a featured role in The Last Airbender directed by M. Night Shyamalan, a summer 2010 release. He has appeared in over 100 television episodes and is actively involved in charitable work and public speaking throughout the Los Angeles community.
