Kamancheh
Directed by Bahman Kiarostami
(Iran, 2005, 46 min., subtitled)
This documentary takes viewers on a journey to meet virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor (born 1963) and other master players of the kamancheh, a distinctive and challenging musical instrument. In the outlying provinces of Iran, ancient traditions are painstakingly preserved as mentors teach their craft to a dwindling generation of apprentices.
Behjat Sadr
Directed by Mitra Farahani
(Iran, 2006, 46 min., subtitled)
The camera follows pioneering Iranian artist Behjat Sadr (born 1924) as she guides the viewer through her intense, compelling canvases, musing on her process, influences, and complicated relationship with fame and mortality. Since the Iranian Revolution, Sadr has lived in Paris, where her paintings are exhibited alongside the works of Joseph Beuys and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy.
