Inverted Utopias is the first large-scale exhibition devoted to the emergence and development of avant-garde art in Latin America from 1920 to 1970. During this dynamic period, artists from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean carried on an extensive dialogue with the prevailing currents of European and North American Modernism. The result was a profound assimilation and a simultaneous inversion of the tenets of Old World movements into innovative and radical artistic proposals.

This major exhibition brings into focus, for the first time in the United States, more than 250 works by nearly 70 artists and artists´ groups from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela. On view, in every gallery of the Caroline Wiess Law Building, are outstanding examples of painting, sculpture, assemblage, mixed-media works, and installations. These works are shown with printed materials that complement the avant-garde manifestations of the artists and groups represented.

Inverted Utopias focuses on two decisive periods: the return from Europe in the 1920s of those artists considered pioneers of the Latin American avant-garde; and the post-World War II years, when avant-garde activities expanded throughout Latin America and artists expressed their independence from developments in Europe and the United States. During both periods, Latin American art was fueled by the belief that art could present a form of utopia and serve as a model for a new society.

The exhibition is organized according to six "constellations," or networks, that highlight ideological, formal, or thematic features of the New World avant-garde. Each constellation embraces a diversity of works by artists of different periods and geographic locales. Many of these extraordinary artworks have never been exhibited before in the United States.

Inverted Utopias is the first international loan exhibition organized by the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA) at the MFAH. The ICAA was established in 2001 with the mission of becoming the primary gateway into the United States for Latin American art and artists. The center highlights the work of Latin American and Latino artists through exhibitions, publications, lectures, and symposia.
